Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust (TECT)

Tauranga needs infrastructure.
It needs new sporting venues.
It needs new public buildings and the only way this can happen is with increased rates, greater public debt or support from Trusts such as the Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust (TECT).

I seek your support to ensure that the Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust retains and strengthens its interest in TrustPower.

A vote for Jock McIntyre will promote greater distributions to consumers and the community which can be easily achieved by building its interest in TrustPower.

Why Jock McIntyre for TECT?

My impetus for wanting to become a trustee for Tauranga Energy Community Trust (TECT) is to see Tauranga TrustPower consumers continue to benefit directly via the annual TrustPower consumers cheque and all the people of Tauranga benefit from community distributions.

A recent trip to Invercargill showed me just what can be achieved with community funds. Invercargill, a city of half our population has an impressive infrastructure, something we all know is lacking in our city. They have sports stadiums to rival some of the best in New Zealand, Museums and art galleries and of course their famous ‘no fees’ polytechnic college. They even have their own TV station broadcasting to the nation via Sky and Freeview.

How do they do it? The Southland Community Trust currently provides between $8 million and $10 million per year to community projects and the Invercargill Licensing Trust provides a further $10 million. Not hard to work out how it happens and at ‘no cost to the ratepayer’.

Currently the TECT major amenities fund distributed $1.5 million during this last financial year. A long way from the $20 million available to the community of Southland and Invercargill each year but TECT has already invested $10.5 million in the community through its Major Amenities Funding Scheme.

TECT also has many responsibilities to individual organisations with grants for events and projects and this funding must continue through the Special Projects fund and the Organisation Subsidy Scheme. Without it, many community organisations would simply fold.

To do everything that is needed, TECT needs to grow its income. Just as important is that TECT can’t put its head in the sand regarding its community responsibilities. Certainly the consumer distributions must continue however just as important is the various community grants available.
